bag restoration: vintage lv bucket bag with sticky lining

this vintage lv bucket bag came in with flaky and sticky lining.  this is pretty normal for vintage lv bags, especially in warm and humid countries like ours.  cleaning the lining is fairly easy but, be warned, it will surely require a lot of arm workout.

gather your materials.  i used an all-around natural orange solution for this restoration (any kitchen cleaner/degreaser could also work well as long as it doesn't contain any bleach), a large nylon brush for scraping and scrubbing, old white t-shirts to protect the vachetta leather, and old towels to serve as your work space.

remove all straps.  cover the vachetta leather with old white t-shirts to protect it from any possible stains. spray the lining with orange solution and let stand for a few seconds.  start scrubbing vigorously with large nylon brush.  be careful not to touch the vachetta and coated canvas with nylon brush because it could cause unsightly marks. completely clean the scraped lining with white t-shirt.

apply leather conditioner.  i normally use fiebing's golden mink oil for my vintage lv bags. this will darken the vachetta leather a bit, but the golden glow is desirable.  you may skip this part if the patina look isn't for you.

ps: you can always cut the flawed interior lining with scissors if you want to go the easy route.

  1. Use corn starch, cover the leather trim when pulling the inside out of the purse and remove the handles first. Corn starch (less than 1.00)and push into the sticky mess with the convex side of a spoon. then use a soft bristle brush to easily brush the sticky mess away. Comes out looking like tan flannel or soft suede. get into the corners. it's a sticky mess - you'll have the sticky stuff all over the floor so do it on the grass or cover the floor.

  2. Hi. What do you mean "(less than 1.00)" when applying the cornstarch? . I have a vintage Bottega Veneta bag with a sticky peeling lining and I scraped some off and it would be great if I could do as you say. Does it really come off easier with the corn starch? Can I use a nail brush? How long does it take to do this (bag is 15 inches tote) like an hour? Thanks a million!! I wanna do this but find it daunting!
