600 pesos tv room-to-guest room makeover

yay, it's finally done!  i could have spent only 150 pesos for a can of boysen black enamel paint, but i got cuts and blisters during the removal of floor tiles.  so, i asked our trusted all-around house repairman to do the rest of the job for me.  i paid 450 pesos for the professional fee, which was actually a half-day job since i already removed most of the floor tiles.  it was a super fun experience, and brutal at the same time.

i decided for de rigueur raw and unfinished concrete floor to complement the smooth concrete floor in our narrow hallway.  before the makeover, it looked like a hodgepodge of floor materials since there were ceramic tiles, plyboard, vinyl, and concrete.

i had to tone down the "coldness" of floor with the help of vintage frames, warm lighting, floor-grazing curtains, and high-gloss black decors.

the paint-dipped native baskets found a new spot on top of the shelf, which i painted in the same color as the walls to help it disappear in the background.  since i have yet to find a plant that could thrive in this sunlight-deprived room, i chose a bird of paradise painting to create the illusion of outdoor.

i did a little bit of switcheroo with the daybed in my bedroom-slash-closet-slash-work space and the unused mattress in the tv room.  i then went the diy route for the rest of the furniture.  an old bench was repainted to serve as a temporary place for the guest's overnight bags and shoes.  a coat of black paint was also applied to the old cabinet from my closet for added storage.  the black woven basket at the top of cabinet holds extra blankets and pillows for easy access.

here are the before and during transformation pictures.

i had a great time doing this limited budget makeover, and i'm thinking of re-styling the hallway soon for a more cohesive look.  until then, have a great weekend guys!

diy: splatter paint wooden tray (sold)

i love easy projects that do not require any hardcore carpentry equipment.  this pollock inspired wooden tray was pretty fun to make and goes really well with my upcycled console table.  i picked black and white enamel paints because they are proven classic color combination.

wooden tray before.

apply two coats of black enamel paint.  allow to dry.

splatter paint treatment.  it is best to do this project outdoor.

apply clear polyurethane for added protection.  wait to dry.

done!  super fun and super easy high-end look for less!

diy: noir beauties (sold)

i spent the past few days painting old furnishings so i could use them in our tv room.  we disconnected the cable subscription 4 years ago, and just recently removed the tv set in the said room. for the meantime, it serves as a stock room for most of our unused house items and merchandise from our (temporarily closed) online shop.  i'm planning to turn it into a guest room or work space soon to make it more functional.

here are the before shots.

waiting to dry.

....and, still waiting to dry because it's been raining like crazy here in the south!

ps: sold.

pre-konmari clothes

before falling in love with konmari, i had piles and piles of clothes which cluttered my closet - and my mind - making it extremely difficult for me to dress up in the morning.  these are the only before pictures that i got from my folders.  it is quite shameful looking at them right now and liberating at the same time.

it was unbelievable how much clothes i amassed from years of thrift shopping without enjoying each and every piece.  during the process of streamlining my closet, i had to thank my iranai clothes before i let them go because they taught me one important lesson.  they taught me to see and appreciate the beauty on what is considered as "trash" by most people.  thrift shopping for clothes started my love for all things used, secondhand, and neglected.

i said farewell to more than half of my clothes, and gained personal space that truly speaks to me - a bedroom, open closet, and my little blog spot.  konmari method is more than just getting rid of stuff, but rather focusing on what gives your heart joy.  please read the book, the life-changing magic of tidying up by marie kondo, and prepare for enlightenment.

650 pesos closet-to-multifunctional room makeover

i spent only 650 pesos for this room transformation and it was mainly for a 4-liter can of boysen permacoat flat black paint.  i decided to turn my average walk-in closet into a multifunctional space that includes a bedroom, blog spot, and open closet.

the simple daybed, which i shopped for free from another room, was surprisingly comfortable.  the decoupaged bench was a practical addition to this area near the door to take off my shoes and as a temporary spot for my bag-of-the-day.

behind the small living room-slash-bedroom is my open closet (diy clothes rack) and my little blog spot.  i especially loved this area because it is  filled with things that truly speak to my heart.  i highly recommend the book by marie kondo titled "the life-changing magic of tidying up" if you are in the process of downsizing your closet.
